The hostel we have been staying in for the past 3 days in the Centro Historico of Mexico City is across the street from the presidential palace and a block down from the popular Zocalo square.
We arrived on the 2nd of october, unaware of the importance of the day. We started out our afternoon, having arrived early in the morning and required more rest, walking around the city centre, window shopping, and eating tacos at a streetside taqueria. Having heard rumors of the dangers of the city, we were quite amazed at the number of policia on the street. It wasn't just your typical run-of-the-mill cops in blue uniforms with m-9s, but rather shotguns and riot gear. Needless to say, our interest was peaked but nothing seemed too out of the ordinary. we asked, but received little response on what exactly might be going on. eventually we heard crowds, canons, etc. from the hostel's rooftop bar, but we were too distracted downing a few victorias and chatting up with our new found UK friends to join the festivities...
The following day we actually visited the site of the masacre, not knowing it was a part of the tour to the pyramids. Thinking back, it would have been entertaining to at least witness the actions of the previous day but mom and dad might not have felt quite the same.
